How far can a minimum wage job take you in life financially today? You go to college for four years to get your Bachelor’s degree. Than another year and a half to two years for your Masters. And possibly 3 more years for your Juris Doctorate, Educational Doctorate, or Post-Honorary Doctorate. All for what? Just to sit face to face with a prospective employer and have them dictate to you what they’re offering and either “take it or leave it?” You don’t have to accept what a potential employer is offering. It’s you that’s strengthening the hand of the organization as a possible employee and putting hundreds of thousands, if millions more, in their corporate pockets. This article will inspire you to take control as a job candidate or a future small business owner.

So you’re degreed up and ready to make your mark in the working world. You have a mastered skill set and ready to show the world what you’re truly made of. The employer has a jewel in the Nile “you” sitting before them. A creative commodity. You’re ready, willing, and able to start your job possibly tomorrow. But the employer spontaneously comes with an offer of a less than satisfying salary number during the interview and your hopes immediately tank. Hopefully you did some research on how to negotiate a fair salary before heading off to the interview. Chances are, if you didn’t, then you have not a clue what you’re getting yourself into. There’s ways to smoothly rebut an employer’s salary offer.

Creative ways to counteract an employer’s salary offer:

  1. Never show negative emotions such as frowning in your face during an interview. Take everything with a grain of salt and keep a positive attitude. If she or he says something you disagree with, keep cool. Let them finish saying what they have to say. Then smoothly react with “I understand what you’re offering. Because I have a vision for being a rare and financial commodity to your company, I feel my time, skill set, and additional credential warrant me to request a salary of $ (salary amount goes here). This will compliment my time, creativity and unique strengths I bring to your company, and exceptional productivity-attentiveness to achieving specific business objectives within your organization.” If an employer values that job candidate and really respects where they’re coming from and respects their educational credentials and work references, they’ll give into the job candidate and consider their salary request. If not, then kindly end the interview and show them how quick you’re willing to humbly walk out the door and move on with your life.
  2. When necessary, sometimes stop a prospective employer during the interview and ask them to repeat the salary number she or he just mentioned. After repeating it again, mention to them that you come well equipped as a skilled laborer. Making them repeat themselves again will put them on the defensive end. If they’re not willing to repeat themselves again in terms of the salary they mentioned the first time, end the interview and immediately walk out the door before saying “thank you.” Just say thank you and nothing more.
  3. Start your own business. Sure, everyone wants to live comfortable and collect a pension for the rest of their lives w/o having to worry about working for the rest of their life. It may not have been your original intention to start a business after graduating from high school or college and just go to work for someone else. Sometimes you have to go above and beyond in today’s world and be an entrepreneur. Yes, it’s more work involved and you’ll definitely find yourself working more hours. The financial benefits are rewarding if you stay on track and do the transformation business work. If you stay on track and do what’s necessary after starting your own business, you’ll definitely find yourself earning more money than working on a day job and for an unthankful employer who’s possibly nothing more than an undercover slave driver. Sometimes, starting a business is what it takes to prosper and earn more than a healthy pension to live off of, because you create your own retirement fund and pay your own healthcare. If you can earn ten million dollars in ten years running your own business versus earning eighty thousand working for an unthankful employer for ten years, which one would you choose? Let that marinate.
